New Orleans newspaper cuts one-third of staff

The New Orleans Times-Picayune said Tuesday it was cutting nearly one-third of its staff as the biggest newspaper in the city planned to cut back to a schedule of three issues per week.

The newspaper said on its website that 202 employees, or 32 percent of the staff, will lose their jobs September 30. The cuts affect news, advertising, circulation and other departments.

It said 84 of the 169 people currently employed in the Times-Picayune newsroom were given layoff notices.

The others were offered new jobs beginning this fall with Nola Media Group, the new company operating the newspaper based on a digital strategy.

The paper said last month it would end daily print publication and increase its online news-gathering efforts.

The newspaper, which traces its history to 1837, will be home-delivered and sold in stores on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

US newspapers have been grappling with a steep drop in print advertising revenue, steadily declining circulation and the migration of readers to free news online. But more newspapers are developing models for paid online subscriptions or apps for tablets or phones.

A recent survey showed nearly one of seven newspapers read in the United States is now a digital one.
