Mildred Williams became Hugh Hefner's first wife when they got married in 1949. Williams admitted to him that she had an affair while he was away in the army. According to a 2006 E! True Hollywood Story profile of Hefner, she subsequently gave him the license to sleep with other women, believing that it could help preserve their marriage. It is said that his philandering ways took root during this period, as did Playboy Enterprises and Playboy magazine, which were founded before the union ended in 1959. Luckily, Hefner was then able to throw himself into his work. Here he is, pictured above, enjoying a hard day at the office in 1961.
